This is Ishmael (aka Izzy), my mostly Australian Cattle Dog rescue.  Found wandering the streets of Detroit, Izzy came to me by way of a rescue group located in McLean, Pennsylvania. He's about 2 years old and in this picture he's looking pretty unhappy because--that collar  and bandage are keeping him from eating his very favorite treat--his own left foot.

Okay, the left foot thing wasn't really Izzy's  fault. It turned out that he had an inverted papilloma and he was trying to eat it out of his foot, but in the process he got an infection and had to have surgery. But today Izzy ate something even more deadly than his own foot--because today Izzy helped himself to an almost full container of fresh chocolate chip cookies from Whole Foods. It wasn't as though he really MEANT to eat them. Usually, when Izzy's Mom leaves things out on the kitchen counter and goes out, Izzy may take a look to see what's up there. If it's a fresh loaf of challah, well, he'll take it down and carry it around the house, but he always leaves it in its plastic bag and never puts tooth marks into it. And when his Mom comes home, there's Izzy, sleeping with his head resting on a loaf of challah. Of course, he's much too good a dog to check out what's on the counter while Mom is home, isn't he? Usually, when Mom is at the computer, Izzy is at her feet (as he is right now, while dictating this to me).

but today Mom got busy playing Scramble on Facebook and Izzy thought he'd better do a wellness check on his three sisters--two feline and one canine. In the kitchen, he smelled something wafting from the kitchen counter. Not quite the smell of fresh-baked challah, but it was something fresh-baked. When he jumped up to see what it was, Izzy saw that it was a container of chocolate chip cookies from Whole Foods. It was right between his food canister and his biscuit jar. That's because these were Mommy's biscuits! And Izzy thought about how sometimes when his Mommy wanted him to come to bed or stop doing something like pulling the stuffing out of his Ugly Dolls, she would entice him with a biscuit. Maybe he could entice Mommy away from Scramble by bringing her a Mommy biscuit! So up he jumped. But the Mommy biscuit container must not have been closed very tightly, because when Izzy grabbed it between his teeth, it opened and 28 chocolate chip cookies fell out on the floor. What to do now!!! The cleaning people washed the floor just yesterday. And what would Mommy say about 28 cookies on the floor? So Izzy ate them, every last one.

It's a good thing he weighs 20 kg, because the chips were semi-sweet chocolate and just 1 ounce/kg of dog weight can be fatal. But 10 ounces of cookies was just about 2 ounces of chocolate so Izzy is happy to report that he is doing fine, although he is feeling a bit overstuffed--kind of like his Ugly Dolls before he takes their brains out.
