First it was the quilt I put in the crate for him to lie on, then his food dish (which he still uses to this day). He graduated to some how dragging things into the crate. It was December when I got him, he managed to get hold of a string of burned out Xmas lights, drag them through the bars of the crate and chew them to pieces. Next he drug in a cat bed, do you know how much stuffing is crammed into a small pillow like that! To add to the excitement he would also pee and poop in the crate so it made it extra special to clean up. After a few weeks of wrecking things, I finished at the job I was at and was able to spend all day with him, as soon as he wasn’t crated, he was a much happier dog. He was adopted to another home in January, just as I had decided I want to keep him ( I still don’t know why!). He was returned a second time in April and came to live with me permanently in May. So far he has counter surfed and eaten 6 loaves of expensive rye bread, 4 tomatoes, 2 peaches and 2 cobs of corn (uncooked). And that’s just the people food!

I came home from work to discover that he had eaten a tube of red lipstick (I thought he’d had an accident, his feet, legs and lips were covered in red) and some blue eye shadow; you can see the red stain on the carpet in the photo attached. He ate 2 tea lights one evening and the mango wood candle holder the next. He stole and ate a small bar of hand soap out of my friends’ bag one night and apparently developed a taste for soap. He found a bar of goats milk soap on the counter and gobbled it up. It made him quit sick and the end result was a huge runny poo in the middle of a parade (the greyhound rescue group walked dogs in the parade to promote adoption); we did however, get quite a cheer over it! The latest was a bar of Ivory soap which seemed to have little effect on him; it indeed must be a gentle brand of soap!

Probably the wildest thing he has eaten is 4 liver flavoured pain killers prescribed for my other greyhound. I gave Sally one with breakfast, when I got out of the shower I found the chewed up pill bottle on the floor. I called the Vet to see what it might do to him, she freaked and said “that’s 4 times the normal dosage”. Hello? That’s why I’m calling you! She said to watch if he was really sleepy (what greyhound isn’t) and if he started to drink a lot as it may affect his kidneys. Again, it didn’t seem to affect him in the least. I decided he probably had to have a brain for some sort of reaction to take place!

I think my retired greyhound bubba (purposely spelled with a small b) deserves a spot on things my dog ate. The destruction started when I fostered him after he’d been returned from his first placement. Apparently he’d been left alone a lot and had developed separation anxiety; he hated being crated. I would put him in the crate every morning before I left for work and come home to various levels of destruction.
